Age spots are annoying but harmless, but well known to many women in their later years. Although they can be harmless they certainly dont look good and so many women are interested in finding out more about what they are and how to get rid of them.
Age spots can be various colors though normally brownish or black, sometimes red. They are sometimes called sun spots or what is technically known as lentigines, and have been known as liver spots because in the past it was thought, incorrectly, that they were a sign of liver disease.
Now this link between liver spots and liver disease is discredited.
You shouldn’t confuse age spots with melanoma, or skin cancer, though they can look similar. Age spots are harmless but melanoma certainly isn’t, and if you have dark colored spots on your face or any other part of your body you ought to have them looked at by a doctor.
What causes age spots? There’s a combination of 2 causes, age and sun exposure. As we age the sun damage to our skin accumulates and we start, in some cases, to develop spots on our face, the back of our hands and on the back of the neck, all 4 places being where we get the most sun.
In the top layers of the skin between the dermis and the epidermis, as we age, our skin can form collections of skin pigment. As we age our skin cells are less able to regenerate and so these form visible spots on our skin.
Should we treat these spots? Well theres several views and treatments. The first thing to remember though, as long as youve had these spots checked out by a doctor, is that you dont need to remove them from a health point of view. They are harmless and can stay there if you wish.
But for many it doesn’t matter that they don’t harm your health. We want them removed because they look unsightly. So if you’re worried about age spots on your face, how do you go about getting rid of age spots?
There’s several options. Some medical. You could, for example, try laser therapy for age spots, though that seems a little unnecessary and may not be successful. Or they can be removed by cryotherapy or the use of extreme cold through, for example, the application of dry ice. In both cases I’d suggest the first stop is at your doctor.
And those aren’t the only options. Modern natural skincare products are showing many good advances in reducing the appearance of age spots and if you’re aging you really ought to by using good skin care products anyway.
This is because of the skin restorative effects of vitamin E which has a range of anti oxidant properties and other properties beneficial to good skin health. Of course many skin care products already contain vitamin E but you’d be surprised how little is actually in there, and usually a cheaper synthetic form is used which isn’t all that effective.
Why is it in those products? So that they can put “Vitamin E” on the label to sell more product.
But the worlds best natural skin care products use a natural form of vitamin E that is at a much higher concentration.
So there are the basics on liver spots, and removing age spots. If youre seriously concerned about them, sufficient to resort to a medical procedure then talk to your doctor. However there are now good results being achieved by users of high quality natural skin care products.
