Skin Care – Keep Your Skin Looking Healthy

Since your skin is the largest organ on your body, it has some very specific and vital roles. First of all, it protects your internal organs by holding them compactly inside and it acts as a protective barrier that is able to keep infection and can keep environment temperatures away from our internal organs. The skin is also our indicator when something isn’t right internally. Since the skin has such an important role, we should do our best to take good care of it.

Ok, so you know the obvious reasons why it is such an important organ to your body but you also need to consider the daily risks your skin is faced with. Everyday your skin faces elements such as the sun, wind, heat and cold. These elements may not seem all that bad but they are very harsh and damaging on the skin. They rob your skin of moisture and necessary oils that keep the skin feeling soft and smooth.

You may know already that your skin is made up of billions of skin cells but what you may not realize is that as your body is making up new skin cells you also lose skin cells. It’s natural to lose dead skins but when you expose your skin to damage like UV rays you speed up the death of skin cells and you damage deep skin cells which result in the skin sagging and ultimately develops into wrinkles.

Turn on the television today and you are bombarded with infomercials and commercials for skin care products that promise to erase wrinkles or get rid of acne. Although there are many great products out there that do work very well, there are many more products that do not work. Many of these products now contain herbs where even 50 years ago it wasn’t really common to find natural herbs in facial cleansers and moisturizers.

For thousands of years, people have taken care of their skin with herbal products. Take a look at the Egyptians back in 3000 BC, they were using herbs such as fenugreek and roses as an ant wrinkle measurement. Skin care products today use natural herbs that are quite effective such as Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is commonly used in skin care products for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and immune stimulating properties.

Most people seem to have a general concept of skin care and so they may sometimes put on sunscreen when they know they will be in direct sun or they will wash their face with soap and water here or there. Sunscreen is an essential weapon to prevent sun damage but do not just lather up on sunscreen on the days you know you will be exposed to the sun such as visiting the beach. you should be applying a daily sunscreen to at least your face and neck in the form of a moisturizer that contains SPF or makeup that has SPF. As far as soap and water facial washings go, you need to use facial cleansers that are designed specifically for the face. Regular soap is much to harsh and drying on the face.
