3 Questions on Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea is a skin disorder characterized by an inflamed, reddish blush appearance on the face. This disorder also causes blood vessels to visibly rise to the surface of the skin on the face, and can cause acne-like pimples and scarring, especially if not treated properly. Something in the order of 40 million plus people worldwide are suspected of having rosacea, although in the large majority of cases, the problem goes undiagnosed. Most often found in middle aged white women, rosacea still effects both men and women and people of all races and ages, all the way on down to children and newborns in some cases.

In this article we will discuss rosacea treatment in basic terms, such as natural treatments, prescription drugs, and stuff you can buy without seeing a doctor at all, called over the counter treatments. If you yourself deal with rosacea or are researching this with a loved one in mind, this article will introduce you to the basics of a good treatment structure for keeping rosacea under control.

1. Knowledge of personal rosacea triggers is essential.

Anything that causes a flare up in rosacea symptoms is considered a trigger. Triggers vary from person to person but there are themes generally seen across the board that you should be aware of. Being in the sun is one of the most common triggers, and many other common triggers all relate back to heat, too: spicy foods, hot coffee, hot tea, heated pools, hot showers, and so on. Be aware that seemingly strange triggers exist too – for some people eating fruit is a rosacea trigger, for example. Learning what your personal triggers are is essential knowledge in working with rosacea and keeping it under control.

2. Use both prescription and over the counter treatments.

Now this is something you certainly need a doctors input on, but it is wise to try out not just prescription medicine but also things available over the counter. It could be that over the counter medicine works best for you over prescribed antibiotics, for example. Talk to your dermatologist and get some recommendations on good over the counter drugs. Be sure there is no conflict in safety with any prescription and non prescription medicines you are combining.

3. Don’t forget about natural rosacea treatments too.

Often seen as a sort of last ditch effort in dealing with inflammation, there are a few herbs and whatnot out there that fall under the “natural treatment” category that can help you. Rubbing fresh lavender on the skin is a good example. Many people with rosacea swear by drinking green tea daily, claiming this helps in their overall treatment plan against rosacea. (Just don’t drink it hot!)

While scientists struggle to understand exactly what causes rosacea, and the idea of a cure is probably far off at this point, relief can be found in antibiotics and other prescription drugs, along with natural and over the counter treatments. Test different treatments out and take with you what works. Don’t let rosacea control your life – get it under control, and hold your head high!
