An Introduction To Treatments For Stretch Marks

If you have experienced stretch marks, you know how frustrating they can be. These purplish lines on the skin can come from pregnancy, gaining or losing weight too quickly or even from lifting weights. The cause is damage from stretched skin in the middle layer of the skin, the dermis. These scars are the result of the damage. There are some treatments for stretch marks to consider.

While there is no medical risk associated with stretch marks, they can be unsightly and embarrassing. Even teenagers can develop these marks, which can be psychologically damaging, as teens tend to be self conscious of their appearance to begin with. The most common way to treat them is with creams and oils.

The sooner you start treating the marks, the more success you are likely to have in getting rid of them. When selecting a product, look for Vitamin E. Vitamin E is associated with good skin health on many levels. It is good for keeping skin smooth and supple and, in a lot of cases, will lessen the appearance of stretch marks. Another key ingredient in oil and cream based products is cocoa butter. These creams can be applied two or more times daily.

There is no way to guarantee that the marks will all be removed. But many people are finding positive results from these products. Naturally, chances for success increase with regular use of the products. Try to remember to apply the cream every day. You will not see results overnight. Keep in mind that the damage done to the skin is deep and hard to fix. Sometimes, it cannot be repaired.

There are also a number of prescriptions available. These usually include Retin-A, another ingredient that is well known for its benefits to healthy skin. It promotes natural skin exfoliation and aids in the production of collagen. Skin firmness and elasticity rely on collagen. Retin-A seems to work better on newer marks. This refers to marks that are a year old or less and are still pinkish in color.

Perhaps the best way to combat marks is through surgery, specifically, cosmetic laser surgery. This process vaporizes and removes skin tissues and removes the scars. Generally, a patient will need to have at least 6-8 treatments to see results. Newer marks as well as older, deeper marks can be treated this way. Laser surgery is the most expensive option, but also the most effective.

Before stretch marks appear, you can prevent them. The best way to do this is to watch your weight and avoid rapid fluctuations. Gaining or losing weight too fast is the biggest cause of marks. Try to maintain a steady, healthy weight.

Also be careful when lifting weights. Increase in muscle mass can have the same effect on the skin as does increase in fat mass. Furthermore, lifting too much weight or lifting improperly can tear the skin which will lead to stretch marks. And, like everything else, a good diet will be beneficial. Eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, get plenty of protein and drink lots of water. A good diet can prevent the marks from ever showing up and may help them ease over time.
