Acne (acne vulgaris) is a common skin disease that can either be inflammatory or non-inflammatory. It is commonly referred to as pimples, blemishes, spots, zits or acne. Acne usually begins on puberty due to the rise of male sex hormones, present in both genders during this period, which could continue towards adulthood.

For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to decrease and possibly disappear. Although there is no way of knowing how long it will take to disappear entirely since there are a lot of cases going beyond adulthood. The face and the neck are most likely to get most of the acne and in some cases on the chest and the back. Thus, during this period gives rise to the prominence of low self-esteem.

Acne often leaves scars that could take on different shapes. Acnescars.com has identified four types of acne scars mainly ice pick, boxcar, rolling and hypertophic. The ice pick scars are the most common acne scars. They tend to pit in the skin as if forming a “v” dent on the skin. They are deep and a classic sign of acne scarring. In rolling scars, it is characterized by wavelike appearance. This would be due to its wide and shallow depth.

Boxcars are the kinds of acne scars that are angular, with well-defined edges. Boxcars are usually seen on the temples and cheeks. However it can be superficial or deep. These types of acne scars are similar to the appearance of the chicken pox. Hypertrophic/keloid scars are characterized by an elevation of the scars that are within the boundaries of the original wound. However they reduce in size through time. In case of the keloid scars, they are characterized by an overgrowth of tissues that goes beyond the original wound site. These scars are rubbery and at times itchy.
