Don’t despair, you’re not the only one with acne. Of the population, 85 percent are normally affected by this disease, and the usual victims are people from their early teens to their twenties. Forty percent of them experience severe breakouts that necessitate them to undergo medical procedures. .
Anyone can have acne. When you’re at a certain age, from your teens to your twenties, you become very vulnerable to acne; it doesn’t help if you’re male or female – you may still become a victim.
Location
Skin breakouts are the normal signs of this very common skin disease. There are various kinds of lesions: whiteheads, blackheads, or cysts that are due to clogged pores.
Acne usually occurs during the oily T-zone part of our face – or more commonly known as our forehead, chin and nose. The second most vulnerable part is the back; pimples also appear on the neck, shoulders and chest.
Timing
It is during the teenage years when people generally get acne, due mostly to bodily changes which include the production of a great amount of oily substance called sebum. Generally, sebum is good for us because it keeps our hair and skin moisturized. When we reach adolescence though, it can cause a problem for us because we secrete a great quantity of it. And because there’s too much, it tends to clog our pores and make our skin oily.
Excessive follicle cells are also experienced during adolescence. Whiteheads are the usual result of the combination of sebum and dead cells. This combination can cause bacteria to develop on the skin which in turn will make skin swell and redden and become a pimple.
A Bad Image
Because it is readily apparent, people suffering from acne find it hard to look at themselves. The people most hit by this problem are adolescents, the various changes in their body already cause them bewilderment, but when this is added it brings their self-confidence down, sometimes even to the point of depression. An indirect effect of this is that some people opt to keep to themselves while others become angry and distressed.
Once you reach your 20s, it is quite common for your acne to clear up. But to a select few, they never totally get rid of it.
Treatable
But don’t despair; there is a wide array of medical procedures you can undergo. The first step would be to make sure that your skin is always clean and oil free. Make a regimen of washing your face two times a day using soap and water, giving particular attention to times of physical activity which results in perspiration. You can choose from a variety of treatments available, some can be bought over the counter while some would need a prescription.
In severe cases, however, it is strongly advised that you seek the help of a dermatologist to instruct you on the various aspects involved in your treatment like medicines, nutrition and lifestyle changes.
