Skin tags, or acrochorda, are basically soft and small hanging tags of skin that are like a peduncle or a fleshy stalk. A skin tag may appear on any area of the body, but it appears ordinarily on eyelids, neck, armpits, under the breasts, groin, upper chest, and other parts that are rubbed against skin.

The composition of skin tags are nerve cells, core of ducts and fibers, epidermis, and fat cells. Although there are no symptoms known as of late, skin tags are benign tumors of the skin. Worsening of this skin condition may happen if there is an invariably scratching or rubbing of the skin. Enlargement of the skin tags is probable when there is too much applied pressure.

People most likely to develop skin tags are those who are pregnant, diabetic, and overweight. Although there are unknown reasons for some cases, skin tags are hereditary for both males and females. Human papilloma virus and illegal steroid use are other risk factors of skin tags.

The rubbing of skin against skin appearing in creases and skin folds is the main reason for the occurrence of skin tags. Bunches of blood vessels and collagen entrapped in thicker bits of skin lead to skin tags.

The texture of skin tags is usually irregular and smooth with a raised flesh to brown surface on fleshy stalks. Falling off of skin tags does not frequently take place even if there are times when some people do not notice suffering from this condition. From two millimeters to one centimeter in diameter, skin tags may vary in sizes. However, there are instances when larger tags can be noticed.

There is no need to undergo any kind of procedures if the benign characteristic of skin tags is to be considered. However, if there are cosmetic concerns that must be attended or if there are incessant irritations, it is best to have skin tags removed. Consulting a skin specialist is the initial step that must be done if skin tags removal is to be considered. When it comes to skin tags removal, two options are cryosurgery and cauterization.

Also available are over the counter solutions. This kind of solution works by means of freezing the skin tags leading to having them fall off in just a matter of a couple of weeks. Skin tags may be removed by means of scratching, but this way will only lead to pain and bleeding.
