Squamous cell carcinoma can develop from a premalignant condition such as actinic keratosis. Squamous cells are affected by this type of skin cancer, and our skin is made up of squamous cells. Having actinic keratosis can heighten one’s risk of having squamous cell carcinoma, so if you are concerned about your health, that actinic keratosis must be treated once it is diagnosed.

Actinic keratosis is caused by the irregular maturation of keratinocytes. The bumpy and scaly characteristic is contributed by the thickening of the epidermis on the affected part. The name keratosis is derived from the word “keratin”. Because of that, actinic keratosis appears to be solid and rough.

Ignoring your actinic keratosis can lead to something even worse. Since the squamous cells are flat, thin cells, they can be easily damaged by UV radiation from the sun. Skin cancer can be prevented if one is cautious about changes of the skin.

Many treatments for actinic keratosis are now available, and its up to you which type of treatment would suit you best. It also depends on your budget and the severity of your condition.

The most effective way to have actinic keratosis removed is through laser surgery. Carbon dioxide and Erbium YAG lasers are used for these skin lesions.

Electrocautery employs electricity in burning of the actinic keratosis.

With the use of extremely low temperature to eliminate damaged cells, cryosurgery removes actinic keratosis. Typically, liquid nitrogen is used for this form of treatment.

Although commonly used for chemotherapy, 5-fluorouracil also helps to treat actinic keratosis. The reproduction of abnormal cells is prevented by this cream. It is faster absorbed by the abnormal cells than the healthy cells. The treatment using this cream can be very harsh, but the results are satisfying.

Another cream for treating actinic keratosis is called imiquimod. Great patience and tolerance should be taken on your part to get optimum effects.

* Imiquimod which goes by trade names Aldara or Beselna, is a cream which is classified as an immune response modifier. Treating yourself with this can cause discomfort, but if you are really determined to get rid of your actinic keratosis, then you should endure the side effects it can cause.

Remove age spots and seborrheic keratosis at home in just 14 days. This powerful treatment eats away sun damaged skin cells and leaves healthy skin cells unharmed.
