Bruising usually occurs when you accidentally bump into a hard surface, and the older you get, the more likely you may be to tend to bruise easily. A bruise is normally a visible sign of an impact to your skin which caused capillaries to rupture beneath the skin without breaking the skin at the point of impact. These visible dark marks appear because blood has escaped from the ruptured capillaries and seeped into the tissues around the point of impact.

The simple elevation of the bruised area above your heart will help minimize blood flow to the injured area and will help lessen any swelling and pain. If this elevation causes lightheadedness or illness, you should consider visiting your doctor.
