The component of sunlight which damages your skin is ultraviolet radiation. UVA and UVB are both present in sunlight and UVB burns your skin. Sodium lauryl sulphate works very well as a degreaser. Mechanics use it to degrease engines and because of its properties it is used in many well known brands of soaps and shampoos, and consumers are becoming more and more aware that finding sodium lauryl sulphate in your shampoos and soaps is not good.

A study reported in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology about the effects of using a moisturizer on mice is deeply interesting. The study was originally intended to study the effect of caffeine on mice, however as part of the study a moisturizer was applied to the skin of the mice 5 times a day for 17 weeks. The mice were also given doses of UV radiation to simulate sunlight.

The moisturizers used in the study all contained sodium lauryl sulphate as well as other chemical and petrochemical ingredients such as mineral oil.

In a surprising result, given that this was not what was being studied, the researchers discovered that the risk of skin cancer in mice who received an application of moisturizer was increased by 69 percent.

The scientists were interested in this result and decided to rerun the study using a different moisturizer with no sodium lauryl sulphate or mineral oil. And when they did this they discovered that there was no increase in the risk of skin cancer to the mice.

So perhaps now you’re starting to see why I’m suggesting that moisturizers with sodium lauryl sulphate can put you at risk of skin cancer and maybe you’re beginning to consider buying a natural moisturizer next time you’re looking for skin care products.
