There are three basic types of tanning lotions. The most common are accelerators and bronzers but for more advanced tanners who like to try new products there are also some lotions known as tingle lotions. The purpose of any type of lotion is to improve the results of the tanning sessions.

Accelerator lotions are designed for the purpose as their name suggests. It is suppose to make the wearer tan faster than they would without the accelerator. This particular lotion is good for tanning beginners because it moisturizes the skin which makes it easier for the skin to take in the ultraviolet rays.

For more advanced users, tingle lotions offer another way to improve the skin’s ability to produce melanin. Although it is not a guarantee that there is any improvement, this type of lotion increases the blood flow to the surface of the skin which is believed to help. Some people might experience a swelling or irritation of the skin which is why we only recommend it for people who know what they are doing.

Then we have the bronzer which is simply a formula used to add color to the skin immediately. The color is a fake tan of course but the instant results allows some beginners to appear more tan than they already are if they are self conscious about being too pale.

More than just providing immediate color to the skin so the tanner doesn’t feel self conscious around other tanners, it actually does serve a more functional purpose. The coloration absorbs and redistributes the light rays to help the resulting tan come out more evenly.

Each individual tans differently and that is why it is important to know what to look for when trying to pick the best tanning lotion. Consulting the people at a tanning salon will tell you a lot about what indoor tanning lotion is right the situation. After that it is a matter of trial and error until you get it right.

There are many reasons why people tan but many don’t realize that there are additional side effects that are beneficial and promote the health of the tanner. That is not the excuse any one to put themselves in any danger by overexposing the skin to UV radiation. The basic rules of skin protection and moderation still apply.

Most people tan for the aesthetic aspect and do it because society told them that darker skin is more attractive. This is the wrong reason to expose your skin to deadly UV rays and is the reason why so many people over do it.

However, there are functional reasons for having a natural tan. One of the most important health reasons is the natural protection melanin provides against ultraviolet rays. The skin produces melanin when exposed to this dangerous form of radiation to protect itself. The melanin is the resulting coloration.

Although some health professionals claim that it is better to take supplements, vitamin D3 is produced by the body naturally when it is exposed to the sun. Just don’t take that to justify tanning on the beach for hours when the sun is at its strongest. It only takes a little exposure to get the full dosage of this particular D vitamin.

Another benefit of tanning is actually an unintentional side effect. Many people find that tanning is a relaxing experience. This calm soothing experience is sometimes the only reason some people choose to tan as frequently as they do. The fragrances in the tanning lotions also can help attribute to this effect.

There are times when a tan is required instantly such as a quickly approaching social event and that is when DHA based indoor tanning lotions are recommended for their safety. Otherwise tanning is a healthy and natural thing so long as it isn’t overdone. It is perfectly fine to use a cheap tanning lotion to complement the process.
