Manufacturing technology has enabled products to carry nano particles, tiny bits of material that can slip through almost any surface. Commercial sunscreens rely on these particles for penetration of the skin. The end health results are not known, but toxins are now given access to parts of the human body that could not be accessed in the past.

Oxybenzone is one a widely-used sunscreen ingredient that carries a bad reputation. This chemical so far has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage, as well as low birth weight in baby girls whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy. The chemical is also a penetration enhancer which helps other chemicals penetrate the skin.

Regarding the active ingredients in sunscreen, five out of six have been found to behave like estrogen in humans, and at least one of these chemicals is found in virtually all commercial sunscreen products. The greatest potential risk lies with breast cancer patients and children.

On a practical note, many commercial sunscreens fail to provide adequate protection against UVA ultraviolet rays. The common SPF ratings do not factor UVA rays, which can do considerable damage to the skin. This point can go under the “toxic by omission” category.

There is still not enough data to draw a final conclusion on potential dangers of sunscreen products. Action by the FDA on this issue will provide a great value to the public, and the use of organic sunscreen products remains a much safer bet.
